MWW Email Update
We’re moving all our email to a new server!
A little over a year ago Montague WebWorks moved our email services to a dedicated server at a new hosting location. That server worked well for us... until it crashed last month. It was a new machine, and, well, stuff happens. Despite the fact that we were able to recover after only a few hours of down time, bringing us to a backup that was only six hours old, I was still not happy. Recovery should have taken only an hour, and the backup should have been fresher.
So, after many hours of thinking over what happened, and talking with our server admins about how our email services could be better, we have decided to move our email yet again. This new server is much faster, with four times the RAM, double the number of hard drives, each of which is twice as fast. One of the drives will be dedicated to "hot" backups, as well as Archiving.
Also, we are switching the back-end software that runs the email. No longer will we use SmarterMail. Yes! We are saying goodbye to SM after about eight years. Instead, we will be using MDaemon, which is more stable and has more options, including Email Archiving, which is actually required of municipalities. It's all good, and we are very excited to make this move.
The one down side is that all your email programs (Outlook, Thunderbird, smartphone app mail, etc) will need to have some settings changed. We are working on a web page that will outline what needs to be changed based on your email program.
Since we host 105 email domains, we cannot do them all in one day. Below you will find the migration schedule. If we host your email, please find your domain on the list, below, and expect a call from Mik the day before the move. If you expect to be out of town, or unreachable, please let me know ASAP so we can move you to a better day.
Here is a page we built to help you change your email settings... http://MontagueWebWorks.com/n/95/New-Email-Settings
Here's a Questionnaire that we need you to fill out, please... http://MontagueWebWorks.com/x/5/Email-Device-Questionaire
Here are some anticipated Questions and Answers...
Will There Be Any Down Time?
We will do our absolute best to make sure this goes as smoothly as possible, and expect no email down times, and no lost email.
Will All My Old Emails Remain?
Yes, if you use IMAP, all your existing email will be moved over to the new server. Unfortunately, we cannot save the "I've read this particular email" pointers, so we'll have to set all your email as having been read, otherwise it will think you haven't read ANY of your emails. There is no way around this particular point.
What Settings Will Be Changed in My Email Program?
The incoming server address will be changed to imap.MontagueWebWorks.com or pop.MontagueWebWorks.com
Your outgoing server address will be changed to smtp.MontagueWebWorks.com.
Your username and password will remain the same.
How Will the Transition Work?
I will call you the day before to remind you that the change will happen overnight, and then call you in the morning to help you change the settings in all your email programs. I'll direct you to the page that we'll have set up so you can follow along the steps.
Can I Call You After It's Done, If I Have Problems?
Of course! You can always call me! 413-320-5336
It's going to be a busy four weeks for MWW, but this is a good move. It's worth it.
